Kona hates living in an apartment. She sits and looks out the window most of the day. A big highlight of her day is getting to go outside......there are a couple of cats that are always running around in the parking lot. She also goes ballistic anytime Conrad or myself gets dressed for running or riding. Sometimes she gets to go with us, but other times she gets locked in her cage.

She could tell that something was up this past weekend. Conrad and I were loading up tons of gear in the Honda. This usually means she is getting locked up again, we’re moving, or she’s getting shipped off to grandma’s house.
She was in for a surprise this time. We took her on her first real camping trip. No more dreaming of chasing cats for her. She got to see her first deer.....then proceeded to spend the entire night growling at the dark shadows. I don’t think she slept a wink. She got to run around off leash for 24 hours straight. What fun!

Kona vigilantly guarding the campsite. She kept staring at where the deer were the night before.
The next morning Kona was still staring into the trees and was still growling intermittently. I guess we’ve created a city dog. Then I took her on a three hour bike ride on the Metolius and Flagline trails above Bend. Because we had camped at the top we had the downhill portion first and she was still hyper so I flew down the hill trying to wear her out. She got a little break at the bottom for a quick swim in the river. The climb is past multiple waterfalls and is really stunning. Unfortunately the dog was still dancing circles around my bike and I was begining to think that I would fail this mission. When we got back to the campsite she collapsed on the ground next to her dog bed. She didn’t lift her head or make an effort to get on the dog bed.

When we got home the next day she slept for 24 hours straight. No whining to go out, no staring out the windows, no looking for the cat......it was perfection.
