The Duke

HIya Doggers!

I'd like you to meet Duke, the latest addition to my pack. I adopted him through a gun dog rescue society that saved him from "doggie death row".

Here's my interpretation of his story...

Apparently last September or August, Duke lost his sight and his New England hunter-owner had no use for an uber-hunting dog who was blind. So the owner dropped him off at a kill shelter- "blind huntin' dog's no use to me".

The shelter saw what a great dog he was and managed to get him on the "underground railway" from shelter to shelter, moving him just before he was due to be killed. Eventually a rescue society pulled him out of this shelter-skelter and he slowly made his way to BC where a foster home on Bowen Island looked after him.

A rescue society I volunteer for suggested that he might be a good fit for my monkey and I as Duke has a few little issues I can empathize with;
  1. hates cats (aka kill them all!),
  2. associated horses with "huntin' time" and gets super excited,
  3. tracks deer like a pro and
  4. needs a smaller simple home he can learn quickly and with minimal risk of injury.
I, as a dogger of superior skill and moral character, have the following compatible attributes;
  1. I like cats, so by default eventually I will meet a cat who doesn't like me,
  2. I'm not too scared of horses anymore...
  3. I know what deer smell like! Yeah... My monkey stops the car when we see deer and rolls down the window for me and
  4. I just happen to live in a small simple home that is kept safe by my monkey!
So, Duke moved in with me Monday!

Task number one was some kind of initiation, ha ha ha! My monkey bathed and groomed him so he smelled better! Wa ha ha ha Now I have someone to share my bathing woes with!

He slowly settling down, but his tummy is a little sensitive.

We're learning to play together a little better each day. It s a little weird that he can't see me do my moves and signals. So I have to be super vocal and bark at him lots so he can find! Today we had a great play down at MacDonald beach. Duke was even walking off leash and I'm helpin by wearing a bell now!

So my monkey and I are bell boys!

While Duke looks like a tank with huge feet and a very square muzzle, he is a love sponge like me and falls asleep instantly when he lies down and loves being caressed.

I'm gonna keep him!

More adventures coming up soon adoring fans!
